Friday Favorites & Giveaway

I'm so excited! I'm hosting a giveaway! When I first came across all the cool running blogs out there it was through a giveaway. I couldn't believe that people were just giving away such cool stuff. Little did I know that by entering that first giveaway and following link after link after link to super cool running blogs I would become totally addicted... but I am. I've entered a fair amount or giveaways on said blogs and won my fair share of goodies so in the essence of pleasing the giveaway gods I'd like to share with a lucky reader some of my favorite things:

(please disregard the wrinkly tablecloth... my mom is going to be so disappointed with me)

Up for grabs:

~A super cool flower motif water bottle. I love water bottles and take mine with me everywhere I go. This one is light but sturdy and holds 16.9oz.
~Chocolate Rasberry Luna bars. I love Luna bars. They are my go to breakfast when I've been out for a run but don't have time to make breakfast before the craziness of the day begins. They keep me from skipping breakfast all together while giving me a fair amount of vitamins & protein... and chocolate & raspberries are two of my favorite things.
~2 Pair of c9 running socks. These socks are super lightweight and have "micro compression" that feels great on my feet. They're perfect for summer running.
~Burt's Bees sun protecting lip balm. I love Burt's Bees and its always good to have sun protection on your lips. They can burn so easily!
~Alba Botanica Sun lotion in a light vanilla scent. I'll have to admit, I've never actually tried this stuff, but I love smelly lotions and can you ever go wrong with a sun block that doesn't smell like its a sun block?!?
~Peppermint flavored Orbit Gum. I am a huge gum addict, its silly but I can't run without it. Peppermint is my favorite because it seriously makes my mouth feel clean. ("Dirty mouth? Clean it up with Orbit.")
~And, just because I think they're cute, a little pad of pink daisy notes. I'm a sucker for cute little packages and daisies are my favorite flowers, plus sometimes bright pink colors make me happy.

Here's how to enter:

Mandatory: (must be done to be entered)
I'll start training for my first 1/2 marathon soon and don't know much about refueling on a long run. Leave me a comment and let me know what works best for you. If you don't run long distances, leave me a comment with your best general running advice. (+1 entry)

Optional: (Leave a separate comment for each. Make sure you completed mandatory too.)
Follow me and leave a comment telling me that you do. (+1)
Add me to your blogroll. (+1)
Link back to my giveaway (+1)
Tell me about one of your favorite things, can be anything. (+1)

Thanks for entering. You have until Thursday May 19th at 11:59pm PST to enter. A winner will be chosen at random and emailed as well as mentioned in my next week's Friday Favorites Post. Good luck!

This is what I do to fuel. On long runs, I have one Gu/Chomps/Beans/Whatever, every 6 miles. I drink water as needed.

During races, I take one gu every four miles with water and drink more water as needed. I always carry my own water.

I have lots of favorite things. Running gear - you obviously know skirts and socks! I am obsessed with my blackberry. And I could not live without my Nike sunglasses.

I have tried the chews (sports beans, gu chomps, etc) and while they taste better than the Gu I don't like having to eat so many...I just don't seem to get the same result. So I stick with a Gu about every 40 minutes.

When I do long runs I start to fuel at about 4.5 miles and then a little every 2 miles. Maybe a chomp and then on the 10 mile mark I do another GU. If I am doing a half I will take another at 12 miles to help finish strong. If its longer than that then I do a GU every 5.
I drink nuun for hydration.

My favorite things....
I love my hulk pillow that I use to put between my knees when I sleep. It makes my hips happy in the morning.

For long runs I eat fig bars for nutrition, my stomach can't take Gu and the other like products. I use Elete Electrolytes in my water because I can't do sports drinks. Even though I'm a sugar lover it doesn't agree with me while running and caffien doesn't agree with my tummy then either. So I'm pretty cautious about what I take in on the run and immediately after. There is nothing worse than doubling over in pain due to the wrong drink or food/food like substance.

Oh and one more fueling tip. For half marathon distance I refuel around mile 5 or 6 during the race and on any training runs 10 miles and over.

One of my favorite things is my huge U shaped body pillow that I bought for when I was pregnant and now can't sleep without. Even though I'm a back sleeper and rarely use it to snuggle and prop my knees on, but I do love feeling smushed between it. Also when the legs need it I'll arrange it so I can prop my legs up so my knees stay bent while I sleep, poor man's version of a Craftmatic Bed.

I drink nuun for hydration and take a Gu or honey stinger with water every 4-5 miles.

After a handful of 1/2 marathons I still do not think I have figured out the best way to fuel myself! Ugh!! Water is all I can stomach when I run. I always eat a banana before a long run. I don't like to carry water. I usually leave it half way so I can stop and drink! In races I try to fuel by mile five or six. It depends a lot upon the weather - high humidity and I have to hydrate a lot more. I'm still learning! :)

I love using Clif Shot Bloks. They are nice since they have caffiene in them so they give me the boost I need

I don't do the long runs as I am just starting but the 2 things I enjoy when running are first listening to good music and second looking around me. I love the seeing the beautiful flowers and trees, watching the baby birds learning to fly and watching the children on the way to school.

Three of my favorite things are three things I don't have enough of. First of all I love spending time with my grandchildren and never get enough of that. Second I love my water bottles. I just have two of them but use them both everyday. They just might be the best gifts I have ever gotten. The third favorite thing is my my fuzzy socks. I wear them all the time and they remind me of warm hugs from my grandchildren.

My favorite things right now...Greek yogurt and True Lemon.

On long(er) runs/races I've made my rule "15 before every 45" for refueling. So I'll GU about 15min before start, and then roughly every 45min in, so every 4-5 miles. I also like the Luna Moons too, easier to put down than the chomps or blocks that are just too big for my mouth.
I hate running with water so I hit the water tables (but would strap on the water belt if the race didn't have tables at good intervals), and though it can be messy, my rule is keep running through drinking. :)

My favorite things...
Running related: Balega socks, Heed for rehydrating on hot days, Mizuno wave elixir shoes, and I too am a "must have gum while running" person!
Not running related: M&Ms, foot massages (though I guess that works above too!), Johnson's Softlotion, and baby feet. :) Also exclamation points, which I use frequently when blogging/tweeting/FBing, particularly because it drives my husband crazy!

My longest run so far is only 10 miles. I have a super sensitive stomach and so far only Sport Beans don't upset it. I eat about 4-5 before I start running and then 4-5 more around 4-5 miles. Lots of 4's and 5's there.

During my one 10mile race I didn't fuel at all but I should have.

One of my favorite things is running related- the BF gifted the Nike+ system I love it. It helps me track my miles and pace. However, I hope to someday trade it in for a garmin.

When I ran Eugene (my first half!) I took about 15 gummy bears at 3 miles, a GU at 6 and a GU at 9. Drank water from the volunteers with the GU. I met my goal time of getting under 2 hours, but the last 3 miles were tough. The gummy bears are easier on my stomach than the GU.

what a fun giveaway! thanks for your tips on the naps and feedback on pregnancy too! 2 boys and 2 girls sounds like alot of fun: ) Fueling for the 1/2 - congrats on training for this: I would do GU, shot blocks, or something that you find works for you at mile 7 and 11. On your training runs, practice with some fuel - I've heard anything from PB & J sandwiches to Milky Ways if you don't like the standard fuel (gu etc). I love the sport beans!

Tortuga_Runner said...

Ok, so fueling depends on the length of your run (time). I am super slow so for a half I would need to fuel a minimum of 3 times. About every 45 minutes, but timed with a aid station so I can wash down my Triberry GU--I don't carry water on well supported races.

I use Gu chomps about every 45 minutes on my long runs. For me that is when I start to feel the gas tank running on empty. I also carry my own water and hydrate as I fuel and try to drink every 15 min or so if it is hot day.

You asked for it, here it is: my fueling strategy.
Unless I'm going over 10 miles, just water.

For >10 I GU every 5 miles or 45 mins with water. I drink Accelerade in between, approx every 15 mins.

Cool giveaway! On long runs I use GU and I take a GU every half an hour. If GU doesn't work for your stomach, there are all sorts of various gels out there.

Don't forget to drink at least 16-32 ounces every hour!

My favorite running fuel is Chomps.. I don't have a favorite type but the ones I normally get are Orange or caffenated ones.. I also drink lots of water, and I'll alternate that during a race with gatorade.. I take my Chomps starting at mile 5 usually during races.

I don't run long distances but I think that postitive attitude is the most important.

You think you can and you think you can't are BOTH true.

Darlene said...

The sound of the ocean, the smell of lavender and the taste of coffee ice cream are a few of my favorite things.

First things first- try out a little of everything in the beginning so you know what works best for you. I learned early on that GU's and I don't get along very well. I now use beans, shot blocks and other gummies. I always start taking stuff once I've been going for at least an hour and then I always have water on hand and then I go as needed. Depending on how long the runs go- I will keep taking things every half hour to and hour after that. Always, always make sure you stay hydrated enough.
